The Spirit of Cain, the Spirit of Abel
Genesis 4:1-16 (GNB)
Gen 4:7 (GNB) If you had done the right thing, you would be smiling; but because you have done evil, sin is crouching at your door. It wants to rule you, but you must overcome it.”
Cain had done evil, that is to say “he did what he wanted to do, without the consideration of others”. In this text the word evil in the Hebrew is (Lo Lo Loh) which can be loosely translated no, no, no. What Cain did was (me, me, me) (self, self, self) (my way, my way, my way) in (my strength, my strength, my strength). As a result of his decision he received a mark, so that he could function in society (buy and sell) without fear of loosing his natural life.
Revelation 13:17 (Amp) So that no one will have power to buy or sell unless he bears the stamp (mark, inscription), [that is] the name of the beast or the number of his name.
Revelation 13:18 (GW) In this situation wisdom is needed. Let the person who has insight figure out the number of the beast, because it is a human number. The beast’s number is 666.
This is all about day 6 when God created the beasts and when God created man in living relationship with his God. What separated man from the beast was his God breathed spirit, so to have relationship with his God. Therefore through this relationship, man lived above the beasts and in faith rested with God on day 7.
Revelation 9:4 (Amp) They were told not to injure the herbage of the earth nor any green thing nor any tree, but only [to attack] such human beings as do not have the seal (mark) of God on their foreheads. [Ezek. 9:4.]
God’s mark or number is 777 (yes, yes, yes) (Him, Him, Him) (His way, His way, His way) (His strength, His strength, His strength). This mark of God that pleases Him is only found in the faith relationship, and that faith relationship is only found in Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks.
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Abel realized that an offering was a sacrifice and is a giving up of one’s self and one’s rights to another. In this case that another is God. God wanted a sacrifice of self and self’s right to rule his own life. Cain on the other hand wanted to worship God in his own way and not in God’s way. Therefore God did not accept his offering because it was just a mechanical or religious act.
All giving must be a heart attitude of selflessness in the way we are asked to offer. We must learn to beware of self motivation in our actions.
