Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad

Live in love as Christ also loved us. He gave his life for us as an offering and sacrifice, a soothing aroma to God. Ephesians 5:2 GW

Years ago in my waking moments one morning, this verse was playing over in my mind. As I was getting ready for the day, I was reminded of the old Meatloaf song ‘Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad’. The chorus says, “I want you, I need you, but there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you. Now don’t be sad. ‘Cause two out of three ain’t bad.” How many relationships are like this? I want you (for what I can get), I need you (for what you can do for me), but there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you. Hmm…so many relationships lack the element of commitment and self-sacrifice. This is rampant in our society today, and if we’re honest, this is rampant in the church as well. How many say to God, “I want You (for what I can get), I need You (for what You can do for me), but there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you (I’m not going to commit. I’ll do things my way.)” Oh, we say we love God, but do we live it? Loving God means prioritizing Him. It means putting Him first in everything. It means commitment. It means being intentional. Sometimes it’s important to take an honest look at ourselves and our relationship with God. Are we one with God or are we just using Him?
